  • Awards are for postgraduate study only.
  • Recipients do not need to be UK nationals.
  • We accept applications on behalf of part-time students.

Standard nomination process

  • February   GBSF call for nominations
  • 31 March   Application deadline
  • April          Screening committee to receive nominations
  • April           Screening comittee makes recommendations
  • May           GBSF board of trustees meets to approve recipients
  • May           GBSF communicates decision to nominating academics
  • June           Acceptance deadline

Nomination forms outline

We request details are submitted via two online forms.
The institution form requests details of:

  • Japanese studies at the nominating institution
  • The impact studentship support is expected to have on the institution

The candidate form requests but is not limited to:

  • Standard candidate details such as name and nationality
  • CV
  • Abstract if continuing a PhD
  • Any thoughts on future career plans
  • Details of course/research to be undertaken
  • Nominator’s reasons for nominating
  • Assessment of extent to which the course/research is Japan related
