- Awards are for postgraduate study only.
- Recipients do not need to be UK nationals.
- We accept applications on behalf of part-time students.
Standard nomination process
- February GBSF call for nominations
- 31 March Application deadline
- April Screening committee to receive nominations
- April Screening comittee makes recommendations
- May GBSF board of trustees meets to approve recipients
- May GBSF communicates decision to nominating academics
- June Acceptance deadline
Nomination forms outline
We request details are submitted via two online forms.
The institution form requests details of:
- Japanese studies at the nominating institution
- The impact studentship support is expected to have on the institution
The candidate form requests but is not limited to:
- Standard candidate details such as name and nationality
- CV
- Abstract if continuing a PhD
- Any thoughts on future career plans
- Details of course/research to be undertaken
- Nominator’s reasons for nominating
- Assessment of extent to which the course/research is Japan related
